Umeå University, Department of Computing Science

The Department of Computing Science is looking for 1-2 Associate Professors in Computer Science. The department has more than 120 employees from more than 20 countries, and is expanding rapidly. We conduct research on a broad range of topics in the area of Computing Science and offer courses and study programs at bachelor, master and doctoral level. Each year, over 1500 students is taking at least one course at our department. Starting date May 1, 2020 or as otherwise agreed.

Duties

During the first three years it is estimated that at least 50% of the time will be used for teaching at basic level and bachelor’s level in Computer Science, primarily courses in programming methodology, data structures and algorithms, human-computer interaction, data communication and software engineering. Courses in artificial intelligence or robotics may also occur. Teaching at advanced level including supervision of theses may also occur. Work also includes research in Computer Science, preferably with focus on some of the areas mentioned above.

The content of the work assignments and the distribution between research and teaching can change over time depending on needs and available resources.

Qualification Requirements

According to Chapter 4, Section 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance:

A person shall qualify for appointment as Associate Professor if he or she has demonstrated educational expertise and holds a doctorate or has attained equivalent academic competence or other professional skills relevant with regards to the subject area of the appointment.

The subject area for the doctoral thesis shall be Computer Science or any related subject with relevance for employment.

Assessment criteria and their weight

In the selection of candidates, particular emphasis will be put on the degree of scientific expertise and pedagogical skills. In addition, the degree of skills in developing and leading activities and personnel, and the degree of administrative and other skills of interest with respect to the subject matter and the tasks to be included in the employment will be taken into account.

Scientific expertise refers to:

  • ability to independently plan, organize, lead and manage research and coordinate research projects
  • ability to develop new methods and apply them to new problems
  • ability to competitively obtain research funding
  • successful collaboration with national and international researchers and research groups
  • commissions of trust within the scientific community
  • collaboration with the surrounding community

Scientific expertise should refer to the subject area of ​​the call. The degree of scientific expertise will primarily be assessed from scientific work published in internationally recognized scientific journals and proceedings of scientific conferences that apply a peer-review system. The timeliness, quality, productivity and originality of the research will be assessed.

The notion of pedagogical expertise refers to:

  • documented  ability to plan, implement and evaluate teaching and an ability to supervise and examine students at every level of education
  • an ability to vary teaching methods and examination forms in relation to anticipated study results and the nature of the subject
  • experience of collaboration with the surrounding society in planning and implementation of education
  • a reflective approach to student learning and one’s own role as a teacher
  • ability to establish good communication with and motivate students, and to pass on to them an enthusiasm and interest for the subject
  • participation in the development of learning environments, teaching aids and study resources

Pedagogical proficiency shall relate to the subject area of ​​Computer Science, with focus on areas normally included in basic level education as programming methodology within at least two programming paradigms, data structures and algorithms, human-computer interaction, data communication and software engineering.

In addition, experience in teaching in the fields of artificial intelligence or robotics is a merit. The ability to teach in Swedish and documented experience of teaching at advanced level including supervision of degree theses is a merit. Experience from pedagogical development and leadership is a merit.

Administrative and other skills of interest should refer to the ability to develop and manage activities and staff at the university, the ability to establish cooperation between research and education at all levels, the ability to collaborate with other research groups, and to collaborate with the community in general.

Documented ability to lead, organize and develop educational or research activities is a merit. Experience from participating in or leading software development projects is a merit.
