Your upcoming duties

Work includes research within Distributed Systems, as well as teaching and supervision on all levels, primarily within distributed systems and related areas. Teaching assignments include course responsibility and administration. Planning and managing research projects and making new applications for research grants may also be included. Finally, work may also include administrative assignments, including academic leadership within Umeå University as well as communicating research.

The content of the work assignments and the distribution between research and teaching can change over time depending on needs and available resources.

Qualifications

An applicant shall qualify for appointment as an Associate Professor if she/he has demonstrated pedagogical skills and holds a doctorate or has attained equivalent academic competence or other professional skills relevant with regards to the subject area of the appointment,and the work description.

The subject area for the doctoral thesis shall be Computer Science or any related subject with relevance for employment.

Assessment criteria and their weight

In the selection of candidates, emphasis will primarily be put on the degree of scientific expertise. Next, pedagogical skills will be given considerable weight. In addition, the degree of skills in developing and leading activities and personnel, and the degree of administrative and other skills of interest with respect to the subject matter and the tasks to be included in the employment will be taken into account.

A high level of proficiency in both spoken and written English is a requirement.

Scientific expertise refers to

  • ability to independently plan, organize, lead and manage research and coordinate research projects
  • ability to develop new methods and apply them to new problems
  • ability to competitively obtain research funding
  • successful cooperation with national and international researchers and research groups
  • commissions of trust in the scientific society

Scientific expertise must relate to Computer Science, with focus on Distributed Systems. It’s valuable but not a requisite if your research relates to existing research at the department. Foundational systems research and systems experiments should be central in the research.

Scientific expertise will primarily be judged from scientific work published in proceedings of scientific conferences that apply a peer-review system and internationally recognized scientific journals. The quality, originality, and timeliness of the research contributions will be assessed. Scientific skills will also be assessed from the enclosed research plan, where the scientific height of the proposed research, the relevance that the proposed area of research has for the objectives of the employment, and the degree of fresh thinking will be assessed. Experience from academy or industry with development of or work with large-scale distributed systems is a merit..

The notion of pedagogical expertise refers to:

  • documented skills and experience to plan, conduct and evaluate teaching, student supervision and examination at graduate and undergraduate levels
  • the ability to vary teaching methods and forms for examination in relation to expected study results and the character of the subject
  • ability to demonstrate a reflective attitude about your teaching and the learning of students
  • ability to establish good communication with and motivate students, and to pass on to them an enthusiasm and interest for the subject
  • taking part in the development of learning environments and teaching material.
  • experience of collaboration with the surrounding society in planning and implementation of education

Teaching experience should be within Computer Science, with focus areas of relevance for the current courses at the department like Distributed Systems, Advanced Distributed Systems and Cliud Computing. Proven experience of teaching at both undergraduate and graduate/research level is required, as well as documented experience in supervision of theses and pedagogical development and leadership. Ability to teach in English is a requirement.

The degree of administrative and other skills of interest should be evaluated by the ability to lead and develop activities and staff at the university, the ability to establish cooperation between research and education at all alevels, the ability to cooperate with other research groups, and to collaborate with the community in general. Documented ability to lead, organize and develop educational or research activities is a merit.
