Eligibility and assessment criteria

According to Chapter 4, Section 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance:

A person shall qualify for appointment as Associate Professor if he or she has demonstrated educational expertise and holds a doctorate or has attained equivalent academic competence or other professional skills relevant with regards to the subject area of the appointment.

Assessment criteria for the employment is first and foremost based upon the extent of scientific and pedagogical merits. Thereafter, the extent of administrative merits and other experiences that are of relevance to the position and its work tasks are assessed. Finally, skills displayed in developing and leading activities and staff at the university, and the ability to interact with surrounding society, and to inform about research and development work are considered.

When assessing the scientific skills, special weight will be placed on independent research efforts in cell biology with an emphasis on understanding biological processes in mammalian cells. Special weight will also be placed on the timeliness, quality and originality of the scientific research efforts. The degree of scientific merit is primarily assessed on the ability to independently plan and lead research and education at research level, where significant weight is placed on scientific work published in internationally recognised peer-reviewed scientific journals, and in which the applicant is able to demonstrate having had a prominent role, and also on the ability to successfully compete for external research funding in (inter)national competition. It is a requirement to possess documented experience of modern molecular biology methods for addressing issues in cell biology with a focus on biological processes in mammalian cells. Applicants are expected to have a research profile that is compatible with the department’s research activities. Applicants with a main research focus on structural biology are given lower priority as such skills and infrastructure are found at other university departments.

Pedagogical skills must relate to the subject area of cell biology at basic, advanced and doctoral level education. Applicants should also be able to teach pharmacology / toxicology at basic level. Documented evidence demonstrating experience in planning, implementation, examination and evaluation of teaching, as well as in research supervision within the subject area is merited.

Administrative skill as well as the capacity to lead and develop activities and staff, must relate to a documented ability to lead and initiate research activities, to interact with other research groups, to perform administrative tasks at departmental and faculty level, and to interact with the surrounding society.

Weighting of the respective assessment criteria

When selecting applicants for the position, the following weighting of the respective merits is applied:

Scientific skills – 70 %, Pedagogical skills – 20 %, Administrative skill and ability to lead and develop activities and staff at the university – 10 %. In addition, the ability to interact with the surrounding society and to inform about research and development work will be taken into account.
