Umeå University, Faculty of Science and Technology

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

We offer a Ph.D student position in electrical engineering with focus on Machine-Learning-Enabled Cyber-Physical Systems. The closing date is November 4th, 2019.

Description of the PhD-Project
Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) is a highly interdisciplinary research area that addresses closed-loop interactions of the embedded computing system with the physical environment, featuring integration of computing, communication and control, with applications in almost all aspects on modern society, including autonomous driving, smart buildings, smart grids, smart robotics, smart factories, etc. In recent years, there has been significant interest in integration of Machine Learning (ML) components into safety-critical CPS. It is important and challenging to achieve high-levels of safety assurance for ML-enabled CPS due to complexity and unpredictability of ML algorithms. This project aims to develop rigorous analysis and verification techniques for high-assurance ML-enabled CPS. The project focuses more on the theoretical foundations than on the practical aspects, and aims to develop algorithms and (open-source) tools that are applicable to a broad range of ML-enabled CPS, including for example autonomous driving and smart buildings. Relevant keywords include Machine Learning; (Deep) Reinforcement Learning; Control Theory (Model-Predictive/Robust/Adaptive); Real-Time Systems.

Requirements
To be admitted to doctoral level, applicants are required to have basic eligibility by graduating at the advanced level, or completed course requirements of at least 240 ECTS credits, including 60 ECTS credits at advanced level, or equivalent education abroad, or equivalent qualifications. To meet the requirement of special eligibility for admission to the graduate program in electrical engineering, the applicant must have completed course requirements of at least 120 ECTS credits in the field of electrical engineering or related field.

The applicant should have excellent skills in oral and written presentation in English. Desirable knowledge and skills include Machine Learning, esp. (Deep) Reinforcement Learning. Knowledge of control theory and real-time systems is meriting.

Terms of employment
The appointment aims at a PhD degree and the main task of the PhD student is to pursue their doctoral studies, which includes participation in research projects as well as postgraduate courses. In the assignments, teaching and other departmental work (up to a maximum of 20%) can be included. The employment is limited to four years full-time or up to five years when part-time teaching. The salary placement takes place according to the established salary level for doctoral employment.
