Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC) is an internationally renowned Centre for basic plant research. We are looking for a first research engineer for our Bioinformatic Facility that will work with us for one year fulltime. Starting 2020-01-01 or by agreement. Application deadline is 2019-10-31.

Description

UPSC’s research on model organism (Arabidopsis thaliana) and trees (Norway spruce and Eurasian aspen) involves small to large scale sequencing projects. The sequencing aspect of these projects is most commonly handled by the Swedish National Genomics Infrastructure (NGI) requiring frequent long-distance communication, as NGI does not have a local node in Umeå. The research engineer’s role will be to support and facilitate the establishment of sequencing project, primarily for UPSC, but acting as an NGI contact person in Umeå, for the Umeå University, Hospital and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and actively participate in next-generation sequencing (NGS) data analysis.

Working tasks

The applicant will work 75% for the UPSC Bioinformatics Facility and 25% as the Umeå NGI contact person. In its role at the UPSC Bioinformatics Facility, the applicant will develop a web resource to allow the PIs to follow the status of their projects, including time, cost, etc. The applicant will also be involved 50% of its time to process and analyse next-generation sequencing data using established inhouse pipelines. In addition, the applicant will serve as the NGI contact point in Umeå. IN this function the applicant will be involved in advertising NGI’s activities, describing NGI’s sequencing competences and organising sequencing projects for interested PIs primarily in Umeå. The work will involve travels to NGI’s office in Stockholm regularly.

Qualifications

You have a relevant Masters degree preferably in Bioinformatics and/or Computer Science. Web-design expertise being a plus. Familiarity with Unix is required. Good competences in a programming language such as python is required. Familiarity with the R computing environment is a plus. Knowledge about Next-Generation Sequencing technologies and their application is necessary, hands-on expertise being a plus. Fluency in written and spoken English is expected. Good communication skills, creativity, working in a team and independence are important soft competences for the position.
