At the Department of Physics, strong and expanding research is conducted in several different research subjects, e.g. organic electronics, nanotechnology, photonics, space physics and theoretical physics. The department is part of the Chemical Biological Centre at Umeå University. The Department of Physics is looking for a postdoctor to join the Optical Frequency Comb Spectroscopy Group (www.umucombs.org) to work on high-precision measurements of entire molecular bands using comb-based Fourier transform spectroscopy. Application deadline is November 7, 2019.

Project description and working tasks
The Optical Frequency Comb Spectroscopy Group (www.umucombs.org) works with development and applications of optical frequency comb spectroscopy for broadband precision measurements and sensitive detection of molecular species in gas phase. For precision measurements, we use optical frequency comb Fourier transform spectroscopy (OFC-FTS) that allows acquisition of broadband spectra with resolution limited only by the comb (PRA 93, 021802(R), 2016; JQSRT 204, 63, 2017, Opt. Express 25, 21711, 2017). We have two OFC-FTS spectrometers, one operating in the near-infrared (JQSRT 204, 63, 2017), the other in the mid-infrared wavelength range (Opt. Lett. 41, 2541, 2016). The measurements are performed using either direct absorption spectroscopy (CLEO, STu3P.6, 2018) or cavity-enhanced complex refractive index spectroscopy (CE-CRIS, Opt. Express 26, 20633, 2018).

We are now seeking a postdoctor to work in a project using near- and mid-infrared OFC-FTS for high precision measurements of entire molecular bands. The successful candidate will work with i) application of the CE-CRIS technique for calibration-free measurement of line intensities, ii) double-resonance spectroscopy of methane, iii) isotope selective detection of N2O. As a postdoctor in our group you will work in a dynamic, creative, ambitious and international environment, with many external collaborations and opportunities to present your research at international meetings and conferences.

The position is a two-year full-time employment that will open in the fall of 2019 according to agreement.

Qualifications
To qualify for the position, the candidate should have a PhD degree, or a foreign degree that is deemed equivalent, in experimental physics, physical chemistry, or equivalent subject. To be eligible the degree should have been completed a maximum of three years before the end of the application period unless certain circumstances exist.

We are looking for a highly motivated and responsible candidate who is passionate about developing as an individual scientist as well as a research team member. The candidate should have previous experience with precision spectroscopy and development of laser-based spectroscopic systems. An ability to perform research independently as well as in a team and fluency in written and oral English are essential.
