Umeå University, Faculty of Science and Technology

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest institutions of higher education with over 34,000 students and 4,000 faculty and staff. We are characterised by world-leading research in several scientific fields and a multitude of educations ranked highly in international comparison. Umeå University is also the site of the pioneering discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 genetic scissors - a revolution in genetic engineering that has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

At Umeå University, everything is nearby. Our cohesive campus environment makes it easy to meet, collaborate and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture where we rejoice in each other's successes.

At the Department of Physics, a strong and expanding research is carried out in areas such as Organic Electronics, Condensed Matter Physics, Nanotechnology and Photonics. For more information see:

The Department of Physics is now looking for a PhD student in Experimental Physics for a project within the subject area of Organic Electronics.

The last day for application is September 3, 2019. The starting date is 1st of October 2019 or according to agreement.

Project description
The selected candidate will work in the field of organic electronics. The studies will focus on the investigation, understanding and development of new types of electronic and light-emitting devices based on organic electronic materials. The research group, The Organic Photonics and Electronics Group, is currently developing a number of different devices, such as light-emitting electrochemical cells, solar cells and field-effect transistors. More information on the group's ongoing research activities is available at:

As a PhD student you will be active in research, study doctoral courses, and possibly participate in the teaching of courses at the undergraduate level. The position of PhD student is aimed at attaining a PhD degree and the main task is thus the postgraduate education, which includes participation in research projects as well as postgraduate courses. The job tasks may include teaching and other institutional work (up to a maximum of 20%). The employment is time limited to four years of full-time work or up to five years if part-time teaching is performed.

Competence requirements
The applicant must have a Master's Degree in Physics, or a Master of Science in Engineering Physics, or equivalent qualifications, at the time of employment. Experience of experimental research, especially within the subject area of organic electronics, is considered a merit.

The applicant must be highly motivated, goal-oriented, and have a good ability to work with experimental tasks both independently and in collaboration with a research group. One requirement is that the applicant must exhibit very good skills in both spoken and written English.

In order to be admitted to the PhD program, the applicant must have been awarded an advanced level degree, comprising at least 240 ECTS credits of which at least 60 ECTS credits must be at an advanced level, or equivalent qualifications.

In order to meet the requirement of specific competence to be admitted to the PhD program in Experimental Physics, the applicant must have approved courses in the field of Physics of at least 120 ECTS credits. The requirements must be met at the time of admission to the postgraduate education and need not be met at the time of the application.

The Application
The application must include:
1. A cover letter with a brief description of your qualifications, research interests and motivation for application.
2. A curriculum vitae.
3. Copies of diplomas.
4. A list of approved university courses with grades.
5. A copy of the examination project and potential publications.
6. Contact details of three reference persons.
