The Department of Ecology and Environmental Science invites applicants for a position as an Associate Professor in Environmental Science who will initiate, conduct, lead and develop research in the subject area, and actively participate in the undergraduate and postgraduate education at the department. Last date to apply is August 30, 2019.

Work description
This position will, during an initial period of 3 years, include 50 % research within Environmental Science and 50 % teaching, course coordination and examination responsibilities at the undergraduate and advanced level within Environmental Health. After this initial period, the distribution between research and teaching may change.

Requirements
The applicant should have a doctoral degree in Environmental Science, or equivalent scientific competence, and should be able to demonstrate pedagogical competence.
 
Pedagogical competence refers to documented experience of planning, implementation, examination and evaluation of teaching, as well as showing a reflective approach to student learning and the teacher's role.

Assessment criteria
Qualified for the employment is the one who has shown both scientific and pedagogical competence. In addition, administrative and other skills of significance will be considered with regard to the scientific subject and the work assignments included in the employment. Furthermore, skills in developing academic activities and the ability to interact with the surrounding society and to inform about research, teaching and development work will be considered.

Scientific competence shall relate to the subject area Environmental Science. Specific scientific competence in the area of sustainability or the effects of pollution on the environment is a merit. The degree of scientific competence shall be assessed on the basis of scientific work published in internationally distributed scientific journals that apply peer review and also the ability to obtain external research funding. Criteria for the assessment are breadth, depth, originality and productivity in the research, as well as the ability to interact with the surrounding society.

Pedagogical competence shall relate to the subject area Environmental Science. Documented experience of teaching at undergraduate and advanced level is a requirement, as well as documented experience of pedagogical development work. Ability to convey teaching in Swedish or English is also a requirement. Experience of teaching in the areas of sustainable development and the effects of pollution on the environment is a merit. Criteria for the assessment are the ability to plan, implement and evaluate teaching efforts, the ability to vary teaching and examination forms in relation to expected learning outcomes, experiences of collaboration with the surrounding society, participation in the development of teaching materials, and a reflective approach to student learning and their own teaching role.

Administrative skills and the ability to develop and lead activities and staff at the university shall relate to the ability to organize education at the undergraduate level, and documented ability for independent work as well as work in teaching teams.

Experience of interdisciplinary research and teaching is a merit, as well as client competence and own networks of importance for teaching environmental health. The term "client competence" refers to the ability to connect and maintain contacts with teachers and researchers at other departments within Umeå University, as well as with stakeholders of significance for the quality of education and for further development.
 
When evaluating the assessment criteria, equal emphasis is placed on scientific and pedagogical competence. Thereafter, administrative skills as well as skills in developing academic activities and the ability to interact with the surrounding society and to inform about research, teaching and development work are considered.
