Umeå University introduced in 2013 a model for pedagogical qualification. This model was revised June 28th, 2016. The aim of the model is to contribute to an ongoing improvement of quality in education by stimulating teachers to develop a high pedagogical competence and also stimulate departments to create an environment favourable for pedagogical development.

Pedagogical qualification is a two-step process that leads first to being appointed as qualified teacher and then, as excellent teacher. The application for appointment as excellent teacher can only be submitted by teachers who have previously been appointed as qualified teacher.

The application can be submitted twice a year. Deadline for the next application date is September 13th, 2019.

Qualified to apply are those who hold a position as teacher at Umeå University and have at least 5 years teaching experience at a higher education institution, corresponding to at least two years of full-time teaching, as well as education/competence in higher education teaching beyond what is required for employment as a teacher at Umeå University. The eligibility must be confirmed through a statement from the Head of Department.

The application must consist of:

  • CV
  • a statement from the Head of Department regarding eligibility (see above)
  • for qualified teacher: main text of maximum 8 pages, reference list excluded (4 criteria) and a maximum of 12 appendices
  • for excellent teacher: main text of maximum 8 pages, reference list excluded (3 criteria) and a maximum of 12 appendices
