In 2013 Umeå University introduced a model for pedagogical qualification, this model was revised 2016-06-28. The aim of the model is to contribute to an ongoing improvement of quality by stimulating teachers to develop a great pedagogical competence and also stimulate departments to create an environment that is conducive to pedagogical development.

Pedagogical qualification is a two-step process, first to qualified teacher and then to excellent teacher. The application for appointment as an excellent teacher may only be submitted by teachers who have previously been appointed as a qualified teacher.

The application can be made twice a year. Deadline for the next application date is September 13, 2019.

Qualified to apply are those who hold a position as a teacher at Umeå University and have at least 5 years of teaching experience at a higher education institution, corresponding to at least two years of full-time teaching, and have education/competence in higher education teaching beyond what is required for employment as a teacher at Umeå University. The eligibility must be confirmed by a statement from the Head of Department.

The application must consist of;

  • CV
  • a statement from the Head of Department regarding eligibility (see above)
  • for qualified teacher: main text of maximum 8 pages, reference list excluded (4 criteria) and a maximum of 12 appendices or
  • for excellent teacher: main text of maximum 8 pages, reference list excluded (3 criteria) and a maximum of 12 appendices
