Umeå universitet, Teknisk-naturvetenskaplig fakultet

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

We are seeking a highly qualified postdoc who wants to contribute to our research in Energy Efficiency with a focus on buildings. The position is limited to two years of full-time with start date September 1, 2019 or as agreed.

Project description and working tasks
The postdoc project is part of the research group in Energy Efficiency at Department of Applied Physics and Electronics at Umeå University. The overall objective of the research activities is to contribute to reduction of energy end-use in buildings without simultaneously reducing thermal comfort. Disciplinarily, the subject address energy end-use in buildings, but also industry and district heating. Specifically, the local subarctic climate has a central position.

This actual postdoctoral position, offer an established collaboration with Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology in China, where access to good laboratory infrastructure is available. Substantial presence in Xi'an to conduct laboratory investigations is necessary.

The aim of the research is to obtain new knowledge about innovative strategies for ventilation but also, at the same time, to identify opportunities to increase buildings' energy efficiency. The methodology includes treatment of data from both laboratory studies and field measurements in buildings. Planning and conducting experiments is an important part, as well as generating synthetic data with different types of simulations. Analyzes can include building physics models, thermal indoor comfort models and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).

Qualifications
The required qualification for this position is a doctoral degree or a foreign degree that is deemed equivalent to a doctorate in energy engineering or equivalent field. Necessary skills include energy engineering, building physics and thermal indoor comfort. Priority should be given to candidates who have completed their doctoral degree no more than three years before the closing date of the application, unless special circumstances exist.

Previous experience and courses in building energy efficiency and indoor thermal comfort is required. You should be highly motivated and responsible, have good social skills, and you should be passionate for developing both as an individual scientist as a research team member. Good knowledge of English, both written and spoken, and a very good ability to write scientific publications are required. Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities such as ability to cooperate, communicate and take initiative, as well as ability to work independently.

Application
A complete application should contain the following documents.

  • A cover letter including a description of your research interests (max 2 A4 pages), your reasons to apply for the position, and your contact information
  • A curriculum vitae including publication list
  • Copies of PhD degree certificates, including documentation of completed academic courses and other obtained grades
  • An electronic copy of doctoral thesis
  • Contact information of at least two reference persons
  • Other documents that the applicant wishes to claim

The application should be written in Swedish or English. Documents sent electronically should be of format word or pdf. Applications must be submitted via our e-recruiting system Varbi. Log in to the system and apply via the button at the end of this page. The last day to apply is June 17, 2019.
