The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics conducts research in computational mathematics, discrete mathematics, mathematical modelling and analysis, and mathematical statistics. Our teaching is conducted at all levels and includes mathematics, mathematical statistics and computational science. Among our partners are international research groups, academic institutions, public organizations and companies.

The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics at Umeå University is opening a PhD position in mathematics with focus on analysis of partial differential equations with applications in optimization. The position is for 4 years of research including courses on graduate level. Apply latest 30 August 2019. 

Project description and tasks
Many problems in nature, e.g., in fluid dynamics, heat conduction, optimization and mechanics, motivate a deeper mathematical understanding of partial differential equations. In this project, your work will focus on existence, uniqueness and regularity of viscosity solutions of partial differential equations related to optimization problems. You will also work with mathematical modelling and optimization involving stochastic differential equations, statistics, programming and numerical solutions of partial differential equations. Among other things, we will try to model and optimize management of a chain of hydropower plants. 

Admission requirements
Prerequisites includes 240 ECTS credits (swe. Högskolepoäng) of higher education studies of which 60 ECTS credits should be on an advanced level (master level). In addition to these general requirements, the applicant is required to have completed at least 90 credits in mathematics, of which at least 30 credits shall have been acquired at advanced level. Applicants who in some other system either within Sweden or abroad have acquired largely equivalent skills are also eligible. Applicants with a degree not from a Swedish university are encouraged to provide results obtained from GMAT (and/or GRE) and TOEFL tests if available. 

Qualifications
You have a master's degree in mathematics, engineering physics or equivalent. You should have high grades in most courses you have studied, especially in mathematics, or other evidence that clearly demonstrates high ambition and a very strong interest in science and mathematics. You enjoy thinking day after day about difficult problems, and even if you do not make any progress you will not give up. It is preferable if you have a broad interest in applying mathematics in neighboring fields such as energy technics, biology and mechanical engineering, and you are familiar with basic programming. You are loyal, enjoy working alone as well as in groups, and you have good English skills.

About the employment
The position is intended to result in a doctoral degree and the main task of the PhD student is to pursue their doctoral studies which include both participation in research and postgraduate courses. The duties can include teaching and other departmental work (up to a maximum of 20%). The employment is limited to four years of full-time (48 months) or up to five years for teaching part time. Salary is set in accordance with the established salary ladder for PhD position. The employment starts in the autumn of 2019 or according to agreement.
