The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 13 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.

We are looking for a project assistant to work at the Department of Molecular Biology at Umeå University. It is a temporary position for 12 months with start 1st of April 2019 os as agreed. Last day to apply is March 20 2019.

Project description and work tasks

We offer a scientifically stimulating environment provided by the Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS), Department of Molecular Biology, Umeå Centre for Microbial Research (UCMR) at Umeå University and the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine. The successful candidate will interact with researchers from different fields and with varied scientific and technical expertise. The project is focused on microbiological and biochemical analysis of bacteriophage Small Alarmone Synthetases (ppGpp synthesis or ‘stringent response’ enzymes) that act as toxin-antitoxin pairs (TA). The project is instructed by in-depth bioinformatics analysis of this protein family, and biochemical and microbiological research programme is backed up by a complementary set of structural investigations. The project will be performed under supervision.

Qualifications

A successful candidate should meet the following criteria. Documented proficiency in microbiological and biochemical assays – including protein purification – is essential, as well as experience in the stringent response, TA system and in data analysis, statistical analyses in R and data fitting in IgorPro. Proficiency in written and spoken English, as well as in scientific writing is required. The applicant should hold an internationally recognized MSci degree or equivalent.
