The Department of Geography is recruiting two PhD students in human geography. The employments is within ongoing research project and the employment will begin 2019-04-01 or by agreement for four years full-time.

Work Description
The current doctoral student projects will be carried out within the framework of an ongoing research project: Climate Change and the Double Amplification of Arctic Tourism: Challenges and Potential Solutions for Tourism and Sustainable Development in an Arctic Context (funded by FORMAS). The project's theoretical framework is located at the intersection of tourism geography, rural geography, and local development. The PhD students will work in a team at the department consisting of doctoral students, post-doctors and senior researchers working in research areas related to tourism geography and northern development. The project is also linked to the Arctic Research Center at Umeå University (ARCUM) and is done in collaboration with partners in the Nordic countries.

a) One doctoral position refers to how tourism in Arctic Sweden has developed. In this context, public statistics, tourist brochures etc. need to be used to provide a description of where and how tourism supply and demand in Northern Sweden have changed to an Arctic profile. Particular attention is paid to the development of Sami indigenous tourism. The work involves the collection and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data as well as collaboration with external actors in tourism in Norrland.

b) One doctoral position focuses on how different communities have handled the new tourism economy. Here, the focus is on identifying important players and processes that have led to different types of tourism development, but also  obstacles and problems that had to be dealt with along the way. Particular attention is given to the role of innovation systems and different types of social networks in the development of successful tourism. The work within this doctoral position involves the collection and analysis of qualitative data at various locations in Norrland's sparsely populated areas.

Both appointments also require the holders to participate actively in communicating research results in academic contexts and to various tourism and community actors. Employment also requires active participation in the department's seminar activities.

About the employment
The positions are intended for candidates aiming at a doctoral degree and are normally full-time fixed-term positions for four years, starting 2019-04-01 or by agreement. Wage placement takes place according to the established salary scheme for doctoral student employment at Umeå University. If departmental duties (max. 20%) can be offered, the employment period is extended accordingly. Location of employment is the Department of Geography at Umeå University.

Eligibility requirements
Eligible applicants must fulfil the following prerequisites: 240 ECTS-credits of higher education studies of which at least 60 should be on an advanced level (Master level), at least 90 credits must be in social and economic geography or related disciplines, and at least 30 credits must be awarded for successful thesis work in social and economic geography or related disciplines.

Applicants must be proficient in both oral and written communication in English and have proven insight into research in social science. Oral and written knowledge in Scandinavian languages (preferably Swedish) is welcomed.

In the evaluation we will particularly consider if the research proposal is written within the framework of the two above-mentioned research projects.
