The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 13 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.

We are looking for someone eager to participate in the development of our high-performing and dynamic research environment at the Department of Radiation Sciences. We are offering an attractive start-up package, access to advanced research infrastructure and collaboration partners in the form of established groups in related fields. 

Information about the appointment
We are seeking to appoint a full professor of radiology at the Department of Radiation Sciences. The department’s areas of activity are radiology, nuclear medicine, oncology, cognitive neuroscience, medical technology and radiation physics. The department has some 80 employees and 40 doctoral students. All subject areas have strong research environments and well-functioning research infrastructure. Some examples are PET/CT and PET/MR with fully equipped radiochemistry and cyclotron, and 3T research MR.  The department is renowned for its close collaboration with research teams and professions, in-house, across departmental boundaries and with external parties. The Department of Radiation Sciences is steadily growing in size, with increasing research funding and a rising number of doctoral students and postdoc positions. We are looking for someone who is eager to participate in the development of this positive and creative research environment, who wants to lead advanced research, and participate in the development of related areas of research.

The appointment will be combined with the position of senior consultant radiologist at Bild- och funktionsmedicin Västerbotten at the University Hospital of Northern Sweden (NUS). Bild- och funktionsmedicin is a dynamic and fully equipped specialist facility with both radiology and nuclear medicine. [

The appointment includes teaching and supervision at first, second and third-cycle level. Most first-cycle teaching will be on the Medicine programme but may also include some modules on the Radiographer nursing programme and other programmes and courses.

The appointment is linked to a generous start-up package in collaboration with the Wallenberg Centre for Molecular Medicine (WCMM). The scope and content of the start-up package will be decided in consultation with the successful candidate prior to appointment.

Work description
The work tasks will include research and development within radiology, focusing primarily on magnetic resonance tomography. As full professor, you will be expected to lead research and act as the scholarly representative of the subject. This may include the management of personnel and operations. You will also be expected to attract external research funding in competition with other applicants and co-finance the building up and running of your own research team. Other work tasks will be teaching/supervision and examination in the field of radiology on first and second-cycle study programmes, primarily on the Medicine programme. However, teaching on other study programmes and courses and/or in related subject areas or general competencies for vocational courses may also be required. As professor, you must be an active researcher and you will also teach at third-cycle level within the subject area. A professor has special responsibility for examination at third-cycle level. The work tasks will also include the development of new courses at first, second and third-cycle level. The appointment includes administrative tasks and assignments within the department and at the Faculty of Medicine. The appointment may involve teaching in locations other than the place of employment. Such teaching will be done in part through distance courses using internet-based methods. Teaching will be in Swedish and in English.

The place of employment is Umeå but work in other locations may be necessary.

This appointment as professor will be combined with employment as senior consultant of radiology at Region Västerbotten which will involve up to 13 hours a week of clinical work.

Qualifications
A person who has demonstrated both academic and pedagogical skills shall qualify for appointment as professor.
Academic skills means independent research work, the ability to plan and lead research, and the ability to impart knowledge gained from research to the outside society.

Pedagogical skills means documented experience of planning, delivering, examining and evaluating teaching, and the demonstration of a reflective approach to students’ learning and the role of the teacher.

To qualify for appointment, the applicant must have a documented ability to teach in Swedish and English. If there are special reasons, a person who does not have the ability to teach in Swedish may be considered but the applicant is expected to have acquired this ability within two years after appointment.

Since this appointment is combined with employment as a senior consultant of radiology, a licence to practise as doctor, specialist competence in the field, and clinical skills are required.

To qualify for appointment, the applicant must be a researcher who has gained a high degree of both national and international recognition, since the work will include leading research and acting as scholarly representative for the subject. In addition, the applicant is expected to have documented experience as main supervisor of doctoral students, from admission to the completion of doctorate, since the work will include acting as examiner at third-cycle level. To qualify for appointment, the applicant must have a documented ability to attain external research funding in a situation of national or international competition.

To qualify for appointment, the applicant must have documented experience from clinical radiological research.

To qualify for appointment, the applicant must have documented competence and skills from teaching the subject of radiology.

Evaluation criteria
An evaluation criterion for appointment as a full professor is the level of expertise that constitutes a qualification requirement for appointment, i.e. academic, pedagogical and clinical skills. In addition, the necessary degree of administrative skills and proficiency in academic leadership is required.

A general evaluation criterion for a teacher at Umeå University is good interpersonal skills, as well as the competence and suitability otherwise required to carry out the work duties successfully.

The same care shall be applied to the evaluation of pedagogical skills and academic skills.

Assessment criteria and weighting of criteria
The weighting of criteria will be as follows: academic skills (3), pedagogical skills (2). In addition, the degree of administrative skills, proficiency in academic leadership, and clinical skills will be taken into account (1).
Description of evaluation criteria
For this appointment, the evaluation of academic skills will involve special weight being given to independent research work, innovative ideas, the timeliness, quality and originality of ongoing research in radiology, and the obtaining of external research funding as the main applicant in a situation of national or international competition.

For this appointment, the evaluation of pedagogical skills will involve special consideration being given to documented experience of planning, delivering and evaluating teaching of radiology at first, second and third-cycle level. Consideration will also be given to experience of supervision and examination.

Administrative skills can be demonstrated through experience of the planning of first-level programmes and courses, proficiency in developing and leading others, and proficiency in administrative tasks etc. 

Proficiency in academic leadership can be demonstrated through positions of trust within the academic community and research councils.

Clinical skills can be demonstrated through recent clinical experience and documented clinical competence.

For this appointment, the following is regarded as an extra qualification: clinical radiological research specialising in magnetic resonance tomography.
