The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics invites applications for a position as Senior Lecturer in Mathematics. Last application date is 2019-02-27.

Background
The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics conducts strong research and education in several complementary fields. We conduct research in Computational Mathematics, Discrete Mathematics, Mathematical Modelling and Analysis, as well as Mathematical Statistics. Our teaching activities encompass all levels and include Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics and Computational Science. We are responsible for a successful civic engineering program in Industrial Economics that year after years attracts many students. We also run, in collaboration with neighboring departments, two cross-disciplinary research environments, Icelab (www.org.umu.se/icelab) and UMIT Research Lab (www.org.umu.se/umit).

With this recruitment, we aim to reinforce our teaching and research in mathematics. We particularly seek applicants who do research in Computational Mathematics, but everyone who do research that connect to the department’s research activities are welcome to apply.

The employment
The applicant is expected to carry out research in Mathematics that connect to the department’s research activities in Computational Mathematics, Discrete Mathematics or Mathematical Modelling and Analysis. The applicant is also expected to participate in our educational activities in the area, which includes teaching and pedagogical development work at both undergraduate and graduate level, as well as supervision and examination of student theses. Supervision of PhD students and postdocs may also be part of the employment. The applicant is expected to participate in departmental activities in a broad sense. 

For the first three years, the employment comes with research time corresponding to 50 % of full time. After these three years, there is the possibility to apply in competition for up to 75 % research time from the faculty. At the department, there is also the possibility to apply for co-funding of PhD-student positions.

The position is full time from autumn 2019 or upon to agreement.

Qualifications
The applicant should have a PhD degree in Mathematics or equivalent subject area relevant for the postion or should have equivalent scientific competence.

In the selection of candidates, particular emphasis will be put on the degree of scientific and pedagogical expertise, which will be given equal weight. In addition, the degree of administrative skill and other skills of importance will be considered. The applicant should have international experience and documented ability to independently and flexibly act inside and outside of academia is advantageous. Additionally, good proficiency in both spoken and written English is required. The ability to teach in Swedish is very advantageous. Applicants who do not speak Swedish at the time of employment are expected to learn this within three years from the start of employment.

Scientific skills will primarily be assessed based on publications in international, well-renowned scientific journals that apply a so-called peer-review system. Particular emphasis will be placed on the quality of the publications on which the applicant is the main author. The description of the research to be carried out within the position will be of great significance at the selection of applicants. The applicant should have a research profile that is aligned with the department’s research activities. To have a research background in Computational Mathematics is advantageous. Documented ability to attract external funding in competition, especially from large and well-renowned funding agencies, is advantageous.

Teaching skills shall refer to subject areas of Mathematics. Documented experience of successful teaching in Mathematics at undergraduate and graduate levels is a requirement. Documented experience of successful supervision of student theses and educational development work are advantageous as well as documented experience of successful teaching on engineering courses. Administrative skills shall refer to the ability of developing and managing activities and staff at the university, and the ability to create cooperation between research and education at all levels. Well-documented ability to lead, organize and develop research activities is advantageous.
