The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics conducts research in computational mathematics, discrete mathematics, mathematical modelling and analysis, and mathematical statistics. Our teaching is conducted at all levels and includes mathematics, mathematical statistics and computational science. Among our partners are international research groups, academic institutions, public organizations and companies.

The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics at Umeå University is seeking a candidate for a postdoctoral researcher position at UMIT Research Lab, where we conduct fundamental research in computational science and engineering and develop innovative algorithms and software for simulation and high-performance computing.

Project description and tasks
Many advanced engineering problems require the numerical solution of multidomain, multidimension, multiphysics and multimaterial flow problems with interfaces. Prominent examples include fluid-structure interaction problems, oil-water systems, dam-breaking problems, flow problems in fractured porous media, and droplet dynamics in microfluidic devices.

In this project we will employ and advance a novel discretization framework, the Cut Finite Element Method (CutFEM), to develop a simulation platform which can reliably predict the dynamics of such complex multiphysics flows. The main goal is to create a general purpose cut finite element software platform for large scale simulation problems in applied science, engineering and industry by providing one of the existing open source and massively parallelized finite element platforms such as deal.ii (https://dealii.org/) or mfem (http://mfem.org/) with modern, state-of-the-art CutFEM capabilities. On the application side, particular emphasis will be placed on solving (fluid dynamics related) partial differential equations on evolving domains and on complex, potentially lower-dimensional domains such as embedded surfaces and curves.

The successful candidate is expected to disseminate new research results at international conferences, to collaborate with our international partners in UK, Germany, Norway and Italy, and to actively participate in joint workshops and seminars.

The position is a two-years full-time research employment without teaching duties that will open March 2019, or as otherwise agreed.

Qualifications
A person who has been awarded a doctorate or a foreign qualification deemed to be the equivalent of a doctorate shall be qualified for employment as a postdoctor. The topic of the PhD thesis should lie in the field of applied or computational mathematics, computational engineering, computer science, or a field relevant for this position. Priority should be given to candidates who have completed their doctoral degree no more than three years before the closing date of the application. A candidate who has completed their degree prior to this may be considered if special circumstances exist.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate who is passionate about implementing novel numerical schemes and applying them to challenging application problems in science and engineering. The subject of the position is interdisciplinary and a cooperative spirit is essential, as well as ability to perform research and implementation tasks independently. The project requires a sound working knowledge in the implementation of finite element methods and good programming skills in C++. Experience with large-scale computing and/or an open source,

C++-based finite element framework such as FEniCS, deal.ii, mfem, ngsolve etc. are considered merits. Proficiency in English, both spoken and written, is expected. International applicants are encouraged to apply.
