Senior lecturers in Statistics

The department of Statistics at the Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics, is recruiting one or more full-time senior university lecturers in Statistics. It is important to have a strong engagement in research and education.

Responsibilities
The position involves teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels in statistics. The position also includes research to an extent determined by available resources. Therefore, you are expected to apply for external research funding. Apart from teaching and research responsibilities, you are also expected to participate in administrative tasks within the department and at the faculty of social science.

Qualification requirements
A person who has demonstrated pedagogical expertise and holds a doctorate in statistics or has attained equivalent academic competence of relevance to the subject area and responsibilities of the position will be considered eligible for the position.

Evaluation criteria
The degree of scientific and pedagogical expertise, administrative activities, and other expertise relevant to the subject area and responsibilities of the position, represent the evaluation criteria in the selection of the candidate. When weighing the various criteria, equal weights will be given to scientific skills and pedagogical skills. Thereafter comes the degree of administrative skills, and other skills of relevance to the position.

Scientific competence should be demonstrated within the field of statistics. Particular importance will be given to statistical method development. Applications of advanced statistical methods in empirical research is also of importance. The degree of competence will primarily be assessed by the scientific work published in peer-reviewed international journals. Secondary, scientific competence will be assessed based on a 2-year research plan. Emphasis will be placed on proven ability to attract research funding from national and international research funding agencies

Pedagogic competence should be demonstrated in the field of statistics. Particular importance will be given to demonstrated expertise of teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels, supervision of degree thesis, and pedagogical development work. Higher education teacher training of 5 weeks or more, or other training relevant to teaching within higher education will also be of importance. Particular importance will be given to ability to teach in Swedish and/or English.

Administrative competence should be the ability to independently develop and lead pedagogical activities and staff at a university. This involves development and improvement work within education, and research within the field of statistics.

When assessing other expertise, the individual suitability of the candidate is important. This includes good communication skills, flexibility, and ability to take own initiatives and to work independently. It also includes taking full responsibility of work duties, and contributing to a good teaching and research environment. Demonstrated ability to collaborate and interact both within the university and with the wider society, and ability to contribute to financial research resources is important.

The Department of Statistics has about 30 members of staff. We conduct research with the field of Statistical Sciences, both method development and empirical research, in collaboration with other sciences.
