The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics invites applicants for a position as senior research engineer in mathematical statistics with focus on development of inferential methods for functional data with application to movement data and brain activity. The position is limited to two years. Apply latest November 19 2018.

Work description
The candidate will work in a multi-disciplinary research environment, including both theoretical and applied projects. The theoretical developments of statistical methods are within the inferential framework for functional data analysis with focus on domain selection. The applied projects are related to analysis of movement data and brain activity. The appointed candidate is expected to work in close collaboration with researchers from the department, from the Unit of Statistics at the Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics, as well as researchers from other disciplines.

Qualifications
To be eligible for the position you are required to hold a PhD degree in mathematical statistics, statistics or similar. The candidate has documented experience of:

  • developing inferential methods for functional data,
  • the application of functional data analysis methods to medical data,
  • the ability to work independently as well as part of a research group.

In addition, excellent programming skills in the software language R and excellent communication skills in written and spoken English are required. 

The research activities are interdisciplinary and build on cooperation with empirical researchers. You must therefore have good interpersonal skills and be able to work in a focused, flexible and proactive manner. Experience of interdisciplinary research projects and cross-disciplinary collaboration, in particular within the medical area, is qualifying.
