The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics conducts research in computational mathematics, discrete mathematics, mathematical modelling and analysis, and mathematical statistics. Our teaching is conducted at all levels and includes mathematics, mathematical statistics and computational science. Among our partners are international research groups, academic institutions, public organizations and companies.
The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics is now appointing a senior research engineer in mathematical statistics with focus on stochastic modelling and statistical analysis of spatiotemporal data and statistical learning with sparsity. The employment is limited (19 months). Apply latest November 11 2018.
The candidate will work in a multi-disciplinary externally financed project with statistical applications in climate research, where the main purpose is to create a long lasting, well-functioning, competence centre focused on minimizing industrial icing problems in the Botnia-Atlantica region. The appointed candidate is expected to work on site at the department and to participate in the daily activities of the research environments.
Qualifications
The applicant must have a PhD degree in mathematical statistics or equivalent. Documented knowledge and proven experience in spatiotemporal data analysis using statistical methods is required. In particular, documented knowledge and proven experience of statistical learning with sparsity and intelligent data sampling based on compressive sensing are strong merits. In addition, excellent programming skills and excellent communication skills in written and spoken English are required.
You are expected to take an active role in this interdisciplinary cooperation and to have a scientific and result-oriented approach to your work. You must therefore have good interpersonal skills and be able to work in a focused, flexible and proactive manner. Experience of interdisciplinary research projects and cross-disciplinary collaboration, in particular within the specific application area, is qualifying.
The research tasks require great independence, accuracy and dedication. Documented scientific momentum and the ability to work independently as well as part of a research group are merits.
Special attention will be given to scientific skills and quality of the scientific production with a focus that correspond to the research project.
The position is full-time for 19 months at the Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics, during the period 2019-01-01 to 2020-08-15.
