At the Department of Physics, strong and expanding research is conducted in several different research subjects, e.g. organic electronics, nanotechnology, photonics, space physics and theoretical physics. The department is part of the Chemical Biological Centre at Umeå University. We have a strong focus on interdisciplinary research and excellent access to modern instrumentation and infrastructure for analysis.

Department of Physics at Umeå University (www.physics.umu.se) conducts strong research in the areas of organic electronics, condensed matter physics, nanotechnology, photonics and theoretical physics.

The Department of Physics is looking for an exceptional Postdoc to join UMIT Research Lab that gathers researchers in computing science, mathematics and physics for multidisciplinary research in scientific, high-performance, distributed and visual computing and its industrial applications and software for the analysis, design and control of complex systems.

This two-year full-time position is part of the strategic research program eSSENCE, engaging scientists at the universities in Lund, Uppsala and Umeå. The employment is planned for a start in January 2019 (precise date after agreement).

Project description
A digital twin is a virtual replica of a real cyberphysical system, like manufacturing or processing plant, or a vehicle. It is based on a large collection of physics-based and geometric models in conjunction with controllers and sensor data in an IoT infrastructure. The digital twin functions as an interface to the real system, making it more easily accessible for monitoring, analysis, machine learning and, ultimately, creating software applications for smart control, predictive maintenance and early detection of risk for catastrophic failure. The major benefit of digital twins is the possibility of experimentation using full-system simulation to investigate radical changes in control strategies and system design. Physics based simulation enables also determination of the internal state in processes and measurement of quantities that are hidden in the real system for practical or fundamental reasons.

The successful candidate will study computational methods for handling granular material in digital twins of transportation and processing systems. A particular focus is on enabling development of machine learning models for state determination, tracking and prediction. The results will contribute to a virtual testbed of solutions for fully automated mining operations, to be used both for engineering and academic research.

Qualifications
To qualify for the position, the candidate should have a PhD degree, or a foreign degree that is deemed equivalent, in applied mathematics, computing science, physics, or relevant field. To be eligible the degree should have been completed a maximum of three years before the end of the application period unless certain circumstances exist.

We are looking for a highly motivated and responsible candidate who is passionate about developing as an individual scientist as well as a research team member. The candidate should have extensive training in computational physics or computational modeling with languages such as C++ or Python, and be skilled at developing digital models to understand complex dynamical systems and processes. Working experience in high-performance computing, multibody and particle dynamics, and machine learning is an advantage. An ability to perform research independently as well as in a team, and good skills in the English language, are essential.
