The Department of Applied Physics and Electronicsis looking for a Professor in Embedded Intelligent Systems to complement and to strengthen our current related research at the department. The closing date is 2018-10-26.

Description of the field of subject
Embedded Intelligent Systems refer to AI-powered Cyber-Physical Systems that feature a high-level of autonomy, distributed operation, and close interactions of sensing, computing, communication and control with a wide range of applications including mobile robotics (drones, cars, etc.), swarm robotics, industrial automation (Industry 4.0), and others. Development of such systems requires inter-disciplinary expertise that may involve computer science, computer engineering, control engineering, robotics and automation engineering. The subject field of employment is Embedded Intelligent Systems, especially in the areas:

  • Sensor and signal processing, 
  • high-performance embedded computing, 
  • energy-efficient wireless communication, 
  • machine learning.

At the Faculty of Science and Technology, Umeå University, there are related research activities at the Department of Computing Science and at the UMIT Research Lab, especially, working with various aspects of development of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems. The holder of the position will have the opportunity to cooperate with these groups, thus contributing to the build-up of a stronger research environment. Furthermore, in this region of Sweden, there are technologically advanced industries organized in The Clusterof Forest Technology. Along with the research going on within the Faculty of Forest Sciences at Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences this constellation provides a unique opportunity for collaborative research.

Description of work
This professorship will during a starting period of 6 years include at least 75 % research within the field of subject. The remaining 25 % can include teaching as well as administrative tasks. After this starting period, the distribution between research and teaching can be changed. Other assignments can be teaching and supervision at both graduate and undergraduate level. The holder of this professorship is expected to contribute to the development of new educational programs.  

Competence requirements and criteria for assessment
To be eligible for an appointment as professor, a person must have shown both scientific and pedagogical expertise. Apart from that administrative skills will be taken in to consideration as well as the ability to develop and lead the organization and personnel at the university. Furthermore, the ability to inform about research and development will be taken in to consideration.

Ability to communicate in both Swedish and English orally as well as in writing is a requirement. It is of great importance that the applicant has good cooperative skills, capacity of initiative and exhibits a high level of independence.

Scientific skills refer to the subject area Embedded Intelligent Systems and include:

  • Extensive and general knowledge of the field of Embedded Intelligent Systems,
  • Deep scientific competence and experience in all of the areas described above,
  • Ability to create, to develop, lead and to maintain research networks, and to collaborate on local, national and international levels,
  • Ability to initiate and to develop cooperation with industries,
  • Ability to competitively attract research funding.

Pedagogical skills refer to the subject area Embedded Intelligent Systems. Broad, solid and up-to-date knowledge within the subject field is required. Documented experience of planning and teaching at basic, advance and post-graduate levels also is required as well as documented experience in supervising thesis projects, pedagogical development and leadership.

Administrative skills and ability to develop and lead organization and personnel at the university refer to the ability to organize research within the field of subject and to initiate and develop cooperation with industries. Documented experience of informing about research and development is a merit.
