Umeå University, Faculty of Science and Technology

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

We offer a Ph.D student position in Applied Physics with focus on Embedded and Cyber-Physical Systems.

Description of the PhD-Project
Cyber-Physical System (CPS) is a highly interdisciplinary research area that addresses closed-loop interactions of the embedded computing system with the physical environment, featuring integration of computing, communication and control, with applications almost all aspects on modern society, including smart grids, smart mobility, robotics, industry process control, etc. This Ph.D. project on embedded and CPS focuses on high-performance embedded computing and control systems, with primary applications in mobile robotics, including cars and/or unmanned aerial vehicles (drones). Research topics include: High-performance embedded computing on heterogeneous hardware platforms that include a mixture of multicore CPU, GPU, DSP, FPGA, driven by applications such as Advanced Driver Assistance (ADAS) and autonomous driving; Application of control theory and machine learning to embedded systems design, including PID Control, Model-Predictive Control, Optimal Control (LQR, LQG), Deep Reinforcement Learning, etc.

Requirements
To be admitted to doctoral level, applicants are required to have basic eligibility by graduating at the advanced level, or completed course requirements of at least 240 ECTS, including 60 ECTS at advanced level, or equivalent education abroad, or equivalent qualifications. To meet the requirement of special eligibility for admission to the graduate program in electrical engineering with a focus on signal processing, the applicant must have completed course requirements of at least 120 ECTS in the field of electrical engineering or related field.

Desirable knowledge and skills include: real-time and embedded systems, incl. real-time planning and resource management, design optimization and formal verification; rule theory, incl. PID Control, Optimal Control (LQR, LQG), Model Predictive Control, Adaptive Control, Intelligent Control, (Deep) Reinforcement Learning, etc, for example; formal methods and techniques such as model control and SMT. Desirable knowledge and skills include: real-time and built-in systems, incl. real-time planning and resource management, design optimization and formal verification; rule theory, incl. PID Control, Optimal Control (LQR, LQG), Model Predictive Control, Adaptive Control, Intelligent Control, (Deep) Reinforcement Learning, etc, for example; formal methods and techniques such as model control and SMT.

Qualifications
In addition, the applicant should, through university studies or other equivalent education, have gained basic theoretical knowledge in embedded systems and control theory, with applications in mobile robotics. The applicant must be able to work both independently and as part of a team, and high focus will be given to the candidate’s potential collaborative skills. In addition to these requirements, candidates should have excellent skills in oral and written presentation in English.

Application
Your application should preferably be written in English and must include:

  • a cover letter with a brief description of your qualifications, research interests and motivation for applying, and your contact details (max. 2 pages)
  • a curriculum vitae (CV),
  • copies of relevant degree diplomas and other certificates
  • a list of academic courses with grades
  • copies of your master thesis and any publications you authored or co-authored (if applicable)
  • contact information for three academic reference persons

The application, including attached documents, must be written in English or Swedish. The application is made through our electronic recruitment system. Documents sent electronically must be in Word or PDF format. Log in to the system and apply via the button at the end of this page. The closing date is October 03, 2018.
