Umeå University, Faculty of Science and Technology

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

We are seeking for a highly qualified postdoc who wants to contribute to our research in applied electronics with a focus on wireless sensor networks. The employment is limited to two years of full-time with start date as soon as possible.

Project description and working tasks

The postdoc project will be part of a project focused on Internet of Things (IoT) for smart buildings. This project is conducted in collaboration between the Department of Applied Physics and Electronics, the Department of Informatics at Umeå University, Umeå municipality and local industries providing IoT for building control systems. The project addresses the challenge of managing and modernizing old buildings through digitization to optimize operation, maintenance and the usage of public buildings. Through sensors gathering data about the actual activity in the premises, the project will contribute to new building services in the area of the Internet-of-Things (IoT) for public operations.

The overall aim of the research for the postdoc project is to develop new methods to measure behavior of persons in buildings using constraint wireless sensors. The goal is to measure the occupancy level of rooms and people flow in buildings. This includes new signal processing methods for counting and tracking people, using combinations of simple sensors such as PIR, CO2 and low-resolution IR camera.

Qualifications

The required qualification for this position is a doctoral degree or a foreign degree that is deemed equivalent to a doctorate in applied electronics or equivalent field.
