The Department of Geography and Economic History is recruiting a PhD student in social and economic geography. The department is located at Umeå University and has around 70 employees including about 10 PhD students. The holder of this position is expected to work within the framework of two ongoing research projects: Mobilising the rural: post-productivism and the new economy (FORMAS) and Grapes of Wrath? Global labour mobility in the wild berry industry affecting rural development in Sweden and Thailand. The theoretical frameworks of the research projects are related to mobility studies and economic geography with a focus on rural areas and local development. You as a PhD student will be part of a research group of several other PhD students as well as senior and junior researchers who are working within the field of rural development, mobility and natural resources. As a PhD student you work independently with your PhD project as well as collaborate with the research group, participate in seminars and other department activities. The PhD programme is normally four years of full time employment.

As a PhD student you are expected to work with a general direction towards social and economic effects of international mobility on rural areas in Northern Sweden. Suggestions on topics could be economic motivations and path creation in rural communities as a consequence of international mobilities, or entrepreneurship among Swedish landowners and the commercialization of non-extractive forest values.

Eligibility requirements Eligible applicants must fulfil the following prerequisites: 240 ECTS-credits of higher education studies of which at least 60 should be on an advanced level (Master level), at least 90 credits must be in social and economic geography or related disciplines, and at least 30 credits must be awarded for successful thesis work in social and economic geography or related disciplines.

Applicants must be proficient in both oral and written communication in English and have proven insight into research in social science. The PhD position also requires oral and written knowledge in Scandinavian languages (preferably Swedish).

If considered eligible the research proposal together with previous academic achievements will primarily be evaluated. Attention will also be given to the applicant’s research skills, specific qualifications, ability to work in a group as well as independently. In the evaluation we will particularly consider if the research proposal is written within the framework of the two above-mentioned research projects.
