Vaartoe - Centre for Sami Research co-ordinates and initiates research in and on Sápmi, the Sami country, focussing on the cultures, societies, histories and languages of Sami and other Indigenous peoples. Vaartoe is a hub for PhD students and researchers from different disciplines at Umeå University. In collaboration with Sami partners, organisations and communities we are building a vibrant research environment for creative encounters and exchanges.

Vaartoe is Sweden's only Research Centre for Sami research. It is part of the Faculty of Art and has 8 employees and 6 collaborators placed at the Research Centre. See more at www.vaartoe.umu.se .

Description
A position is open for a Postdoctoral Researcher (2 years) to develop Sami research at Vaartoe. The employment will be located at Vaartoe.

The position is open to applicants with projects in any area of Sami research, including but not limited to the main research focuses of Vaartoe today which are political development, history, health, education, land right, natural resource exploitation.
The planned project must be developed and executed in co-operation with the Sami Community.

The employment period is two years full-time starting on the 1st of October 2018 or upon agreement.

Qualifications
We are looking for applicants with a PhD in an area of relevance for the planned project or a foreign degree equivalent to such PhD, and with a strong background in in Sami research. A precondition is that the applicant has not previously been employed as a Postdoc at Umeå University for more than a year within the same or equivalent discipline. Priority should be given to candidates who have completed their doctoral degree no more than three years before the closing date of the application. The candidates who have completed their degree prior to this time period may be taken into consideration if special circumstances exist. Special circumstances include absence due to illness, parental leave or clinical practice, appointments of trust in trade union organizations or similar circumstances.

Applicants must demonstrate independent research skills and have a strong publishing record in Swedish and/or English. Prior work in Sami research is mandatory, as well as a track record of research done in collaboration with Sami partners. A reasoned approach to research ethics in Indigenous Research is required.

Good communication skills in Swedish and English are a requirement.
Sami linguistic and cultural competences are considered a merit.

  • A brief summary (max two A4 pages) of your research experience
  • A research plan for the postdoctoral period (max 10 pages) where you describe your planned work in the field including a time plan, a publication plan as well as addressing on ethical aspects of the proposed project
  • A CV including a list of publications
  • Contact information of two reference persons
  • Copy of PhD Certificate and other relevant documentation
