Umeå University, Faculty of Science and Technology

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

At the Department of Physics, strong and expanding research is conducted in several different research subjects, e.g. organic electronics, nanotechnology, photonics, space physics and theoretical physics. The department is part of the Chemical Biological Centre at Umeå University. We have a strong focus on interdisciplinary research and excellent access to modern instrumentation and infrastructure for analysis.

The Department of Physics invites applicants for a postdoctoral position.
The research is part of EU Graphene Flagship project with specific target on development of new materials optimized for energy storage applications using supercapacitors and studies of their structure and sorption properties.
Last day to apply is 2018-06-21.

Project description
Energy storage parameters of supercapacitors need to be improved for broader applications. The project is focused on design of new graphene-related materials optimized for preparation of electrode materials for supercapacitors. The work will be aimed on synthesis of new electrically conductive high surface area materials using chemical modification of graphene and graphene oxides, defect engineering, preparation of graphene inks and preparation of electrodes using various methods. The project also includes characterization of supercapacitor device performance. The project is a part of EU Graphene Flagship and includes collaboration with several European partners.

The position is a full-time employment over a period of 2 years, starting in September 2018 or according to agreement. Last day to apply is 2018-06-21.

Competence requirements
To qualify for the position, you should have a PhD degree, or a foreign degree that is deemed equivalent, in physics or another relevant area. To be eligible, the degree should have been completed a maximum of three years before the end of the application period unless certain circumstances exist.

We are looking for a highly motivated and responsible candidate who is passionate for developing as an individual scientist as well as a research team member.
Documented previous experience with graphene-related materials, characterization of supercapacitors and/or synthesis and characterization of carbon-based materials is required. Experience with X-ray diffraction, Raman and FTIR spectroscopy is highly desirable.

Emphasis will also be placed on personal qualities such as collaboration and communication skills and analytical capacity. It is important that you have a good sense of initiative, and an ability to work independently. Since you will work in an international environment, very good communication skills in written and spoken English are required.

The application
The application should include:

1. A cover letter summarizing your qualifications, your scientific interests, and your motives for applying (max 2 pages),

2. A curriculum vitae (CV) with a publication list,

3. Copies of relevant degree certificates,

4. Copies of the PhD thesis and relevant publications (max 5 publications),

5. Names and contact information of three references.

The application is to be submitted in our e-recruitment system and must be received June 21, 2018 at the latest.
