Molecular Biology Department

The department provides a vibrant interfaculty research environment and there is access to a wide range of state-of-the-art imaging, metabolomics, genomics and screening facilities. You will join a research team that is part of the Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS), which is internationally well-connected through the EMBL Nordic Partnership for Molecular Medicine.

Description of tasks

We are building a new research group at MIMS to study the mosquito transmission of malaria parasites in a rodent model. The project forms part of a major effort funded by the European Research Council to systematically identify parasite gene functions in malaria transmission. You will work with different members of the team to provide specialized support for work with our rodent malaria transmission model, including the breeding and dissection of mosquitoes, infection of cultured cells and maintaining parasites in mice and rats. You will also provide general laboratory management. The position is for two years. The position is full time and is placed at the Department of Molecular Biology, Umeå University, Sweden. Essential qualifications

  1. The equivalent of a European bachelor’s or master’s degree in a biological science.
  2. Proven skills in cell culture.
  3. Two or more years’ experience in research with a rodent model of disease (preferentially mouse), including experience in administering i. v. injections and anaesthesia.
  4. Two or more years’ experience in rearing insects for research.
  5. Lab management experience including qualifications in general and biological health and safety.
  6. Ability to follow protocols and procedures precisely.
  7. Good experimental and record keeping skills.
  8. Excellent team working and communications skills for this highly interactive role.
  9. Good oral and written communication in English.
