Umeå universitet, Teknisk-naturvetenskaplig fakultet

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

The Department of Chemistry is looking for a postdoc in the field of selective catalysis, within organic chemistry. The position is full time for two years, and approximate starting date is August 2018 or by agreement. Last day for application is on June 8, 2018.

Information about the department
Department of Chemistry is the largest department in the Faculty of Science and Technology, with approximately 200 employees, including about 40 doctoral students, and a strong and expanding research. Three major areas of research; Biological Chemistry, Environmental and Biogeochemistry and Technical Chemistry, represents the research and chemistry education of our department. We are also a strong partner in KBC, The Chemical-Biological Centre.

Project description
Effective, selective and environmentally friendly synthetic methods are of utmost importance for the formation of fine chemicals, pharmaceuticals and biologically active compounds. The use of catalytic methods is highly advantageous since novel compounds can be produced in a green and sustainable way. A major challenge within the development of novel synthetic methods is to be able to control the selectivity of the chemical process. Within this project, based at the Department of Chemistry, novel catalytic synthetic protocols will be developed and evaluated on the basis of efficacy, selectivity and usability. Mechanistic investigations on the developed methods will be conducted. The catalytic methods will be applied in the formation of simple compounds as well as on more complex molecular systems. With regards to the latter, such evaluations will be performed in collaboration with researchers who study compounds with important biological activity. The project will be carried out both independently and in collaboration with other researchers.

Qualifications
The successful candidate should hold a PhD degree, or a foreign degree that is deemed equivalent, in organic chemistry or an equivalent subject. To be eligible you should have completed your PhD degree a maximum of three years before the end of the application period, unless special circumstances exists. Particular emphasis will be given to scientific skills in synthetic organic chemistry, focused on catalysis. Documented experience from leading projects focused on catalysis is a merit. Good proficiency in English, both spoken and written, is required.

The position is full time for two years starting in August 2018, or by agreement.

Application
The application should include:

  • A cover letter with motives for applying (max 2 pages).
  • A Curriculum Vitae with a publication list.
  • Certified copies of degree diploma(s), and other relevant certificates.
  • Copy of the PhD thesis.
  • Name and contact information of at least two reference persons.

You apply through our e-recruitment system. Documents sent electronically must be in Word or PDF format. Last day to apply is June 8, 2018. For more information, please contact Professor Hans Adolfsson, hans.adolfsson@umu.se
