The Department of Business Administration at Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics is looking for a PhD student in Business Administration, Entrepreneurship, with the Industrial Doctoral School of Umeå University. Apply 30th of May, at the latest.

Project description                                                                    
The doctoral student will work within Business Administration at Umeå School of Business, Economics, and Statistics (USBE) but also belong to the Industrial Doctoral School for Research and Innovation of Umeå University through cooperation with the company MacGregor Sweden AB, www.macgregor.com. MacGregor is a global company that shapes the offshore and marine industries by offering world-leading engineering solutions and services for handling marine cargoes, vessel operations, offshore loads, crude/LNG transfer and offshore mooring that are designed to perform with the sea. The student will be part of a research project in innovation management which explores how transformative innovation happens in the global maritime transport industry.

MacGregor’s areas of operation are central to this Ph.D. project. Thus cooperation with the company will be a vital part of the student’s work. The student will have the opportunity to, in dialogue with the supervisors, shape both methodological and theoretical aspects of the work.

As a Ph.D. student, you should take courses and do an independent research project. You are expected to contribute to the research environment through active participation in seminars, conferences and other research activities that support your research as well as the research environment. Doctoral education equals four years of full-time studies (240 ECTs). From the second year, the student may teach and carry out other school tasks which correspond to 20% of the working hours. Eligibility and selection for doctoral education
To possess basic eligibility, the applicant should hold an advanced degree, have completed studies equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, at least 60 of which at an advanced level, or in some other manner have acquired skills which are equivalent to this requirement. To meet the requirements for individual eligibility, an applicant must have satisfactorily undertaken courses within Business Administration equivalent to at least 90 higher education credits, including an independent work (thesis/equiv.) worth at least 15 credits.

Selection among applicants that fulfill the formal requirements will be based on the applicant’s perceived ability to succeed with the education, for example considering the following:

  • previous academic results and ability to meet deadlines
  • methodological and scientific maturity
  • quality of research draft
  • communicative skills, both orally and in writing
  • ability to cooperate
  • individual personal suitability

When considering the individual suitability, we will consider in particular:

  • good analytical skills
  • good skills in English
  • good skills in Swedish is considered as a merit
  • ambitions with the doctoral education and with work within USBE's unit of Business administration

Moreover, it is also qualifying to have taken courses aiming at the project's central concepts/areas, to have documented ability to write scientifically, as well as competence and experience relating to innovation management. We seek equal representation of men and women.

Umeå University Industrial Doctoral School for research and innovation (IDS) is a multidisciplinary research school that includes the faculties of Arts; Medicine; Social Sciences; and Science and Technology. The IDS projects are based on collaborations between Umeå University and external organizations; a company, foundation and/or public administration. Ph.D. students in IDS form an interdisciplinary group that, in addition to each scientific specialization, is given a tailor-made course package providing a strong platform for future work within research and development. A Ph.D. position in IDS also includes a three-month internship at the external organizations for each Ph.D. student.
