Umeå University, Faculty of Social Sciences

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

Project description:

Centre for Demographic and Ageing Research (CEDAR) (www.cedar.umu.se) announces a postdoc position in cognitive neuroscience. CEDAR is an interdisciplinary research centre where research focuses on a variety of perspectives on ageing and is often based on longitudinal data. The research in cognitive neuroscience is carried out in close collaboration with Umeå center for Functional Brain Imaging (UFBI) (www.ufbi.umu.se director: Lars Nyberg). UFBI is an interdisciplinary research center where functional and structural brain imaging is used to address several basic science and clinical research questions. The current position is within cognitive neuroscience and will be part of the interdisciplinary research programme “Paths to Healthy and Active Ageing” (PHACTUM, PI: Gunnar Malmberg), funded by Forte - Swedish Research Council for Health, Working Life and Welfare

The post doc in cognitive neuroscience will be involved in research on brain ageing over the life span and work within professor Carl-Johan Boraxbekk’s research group. The purpose of the current position is to continue to develop novel methods to characterize brain aging based on structural/functional MRI, PET, cognition, and physiological variables. By using brain imaging methods and advanced analytical methods (e.g., machine learning) it is possible to calculate an individual’s “brain age”. In this project we want to continue exploring how a multimodal characterization of brain age is related to cognitive function over time, as well as how this is influenced by physical fitness. The work involves analyses of existing longitudinal data as well as the collection of new data.

Qualifications:

Eligible to apply are individuals with a PhD or equivalent scientific skills.  Priority will be given to applicants who graduated within three years before the application deadline.

A successful candidate should be skilled in cognitive neuroscience, statistics, and scientific communication in English, both orally and in writing. Experience with functional brain imaging, preferably fMRI and PET, and programming skills, are of advantage. The applicant should be able to work independently as well as collaboratively in a research team.

Application for the fellowship should include:

  1. A brief cover letter (about one page) that describes the applicant’s research
experience, research interests, and suitability for the Project.

  2. Curriculum vitae including information about academic degrees (with verifications),
technical expertise, employments, list of publications, and names and contact
      information for two references.

The position is for two years. Start date: September the 1st 2018, or upon agreement.

Applications are submitted in Umeå University’s Varbi recruitment system May 15 2018 at the latest.

Any documents that cannot be submitted in Varbi can be sent to Carl-Johan Boraxbekk, Umeå Universitet, CEDAR, 901 97 Umeå, Sweden, reference number AN 2.2.1-682-18.
