Umeå University, Department of Radiation Sciences

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

We welcome applications for postdoctoral studies in integrative molecular epidemiology (colorectal cancer) at the Department of radiation sciences, Umeå University. The position is for two years, starting in autumn 2018 or upon other agreement, no later than January 1 2019.

Project description:

The research project aims to identify, distinguish between, and validate risk-predictive and diagnostic biomarkers of colorectal cancer. Combining blood-based biomarkers with refined risk profiling could allow more personalized colorectal cancer prevention and screening, through the identification of high-risk individuals for earlier or more frequent colonoscopy.

The project uses prediagnostic blood samples, including highly unique sets of repeated prediagnostic measures and pre- and postdiagnostic measures from the same patients. Analyses range from broad, omics technologies including untargeted metabolomics and targeted proteomics, to candidate biomarkers from the literature.

Eligibility and other qualifications required:

At the time of admission, the applicant must have a Ph.D. (or equivalent degree) in statistics, epidemiology, bioinformatics, genetics or similar. A maximum of three years of postdoctoral training prior to the application deadline for this position is acceptable. The candidate must have experience working with large datasets and be fluent in R/Bioconductor or equivalent. Specifically, experience with statistical modelling using both continuous and binary outcomes, large sets of covariates, repeated measurements, and evaluation of prediction accuracy is rexpected. A very good command of written and spoken English is required.

We are looking for a highly motivated scientist who is quick to learn and has a demonstrated ability to work productively both independently and in a multidisciplinary team. Substantial experience of molecular epidemiology, including registry-based and biobank research is an advantage but not obligatory. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated research interest and experience in areas currently under investigation in the research group, and to candidates with superior analytic and communication skills, see link for examples of research from the group.
