The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics conducts research in computational mathematics, discrete mathematics, mathematical modelling and analysis, and mathematical statistics. Our teaching is conducted at all levels and includes mathematics, mathematical statistics and computational science. Among our partners are international research groups, academic institutions, public organizations and companies.

Umeå University offers a post-doctoral position in Spatio-Temporal Statistics for Prehospital resource optimization. The position is placed at the Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics and comprises two years of research. The application deadline is 11 June 2018.

The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical statistics
The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics with around 50 active researchers on different seniority levels, conducts research in key areas of computational science, mathematics and mathematical statistics. We offer courses at all levels, as well as consulting services to partners within and outside of the university. The department offers a theoretical as well as multidisciplinary environment and is a founding partner of prominent interdisciplinary research labs. The atmosphere is both friendly and inspiring.

Project description
An aging population, urbanization and medical progress demand a flexible prehospital care. The changes require that the emergency medical service is customizable so that resources can be used sustainably, efficiently and equitably. This includes an equal care regardless of age, sex and geography, and that the environmental perspective is taken into account.

The aim of the project is to develop a broad solution that enables the prehospital care to be organized in an optimal way, which requires that we can predict key metrics for different resource allocations and simulate future alarms. Our solution combines unique historical alarm-data, advanced statistical modelling and large-scale simulations to derive information that allows for transparent decision-making and optimal resource utilization. The solution makes it easy to highlight the implications for specific patient groups, which is central from a democracy and gender perspective.

The prehospital care in Sweden has about 660 ambulances, respond to about 1.2 million emergency calls per year, and costs more than 4 billion SEK per year. The tool that we intend to develop creates settings for a systematic quality management, which in the long run can cause large efficiency gains.

The successful candidate, who will be based at the Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics, will be responsible for modelling incoming calls to the emergency services, based on historical observations. This entails a large portion of data analysis and spatio-temporal point pattern statistics. The project is strongly cross-disciplinary, involving people from both academia and emergency services, and the candidate will work in close collaboration with various group members, in particular another post-doctoral candidate in the project who works within computer science.

Qualifications
To qualify for the position, you must have obtained a PhD degree, or a foreign degree deemed equivalent, in mathematical statistics or equivalent subject. Candidates who have not yet obtained their doctorate degree certificates but have completed all parts of the degree can apply but must have the certificates before the start of employment. To be eligible to apply, the degree must have been obtained no more than three years before the closing date of the position, unless there are particular circumstances.

Programming skills, preferably in the programming language R, are a requirement; skills in other programming languages are a merit. The applicant should also have documented knowledge of statistics, preferably spatial/spatio-temporal statistics with focus on point pattern analysis.  Due to the project’s cross-disciplinary nature, it is important that the candidate possesses communication skills and social skills, and, in addition, has the ability to conduct independent research and work as a team member. Good skills in written and oral English are also a requirement.

About the position
The post-doctoral position comprises two years and starts 1 July 2018 or according to agreement.
