At the Department of Physics, strong and expanding research is conducted in several different research subjects, e.g. organic electronics, nanotechnology, photonics, space physics and theoretical physics. The department is part of the Chemical Biological Centre at Umeå University. Department of Physics announces a PhD position for a project focusing on graphene-related materials for energy storage applications.. Exact start date according to agreement. Last day for application is 2018-04-30.
Project description
The focus of the project is on graphene-related materials for energy storage applications. The research is part of a project with specific aim on development of new graphene-related materials and the study of their structure, properties and applications.
The PhD student will be engaged in synthesis of various new carbon materials with particular focus on porous high surface area conductive graphene-related composites suitable for preparation of electrodes for supercapacitors. Characterization of materials will be performed using x-ray diffraction, Raman and IR spectroscopy, TGA/DSC etc. It is also planned to use synchrotron radiation facilities and neutron scattering methods for fundamental studies of graphene-related materials. The project will be closely related to research performed within EU Graphene Flagship for energy storage applications.
As a PhD student you will perform research, study PhD courses and participate in undergraduate education. The objective of a PhD student position is to obtain a PhD degree. The time period for the position is limited to four years. The position may also include teaching (up to 20%) as teaching assistant. If so, the total time for the position is extended accordingly (up to a maximum of five years).
Competence requirements
M.S./M.Phil. in Physics, Chemistry or Material Science or similar qualifications is a requirement.
Competence and experience of experimental research, including material synthesis, material characterization and spectroscopy, are meritorious.
Previous experience and competence with above listed methods and carbon materials (graphene, graphite oxide, carbon nanotubes, fullerenes) is not obligatory but is an advantage.
The applicant should be motivated, dedicated to work towards an aim, and have good ability to work with mainly experimental assignments both independently and in a research group. The work will involve handling and operating chemicals and hydrogen at high pressures, therefore high accuracy and a responsible approach are required for safety. High level of written and spoken English is a requirement.
To be admitted for studies at third-cycle level the applicant is required to have completed a second-cycle level degree, or completed course requirements of at least 240 ECTS credits, of which at least 60 ECTS credits are at second-cycle level, or have an equivalent education from abroad or equivalent qualifications.
To fulfill the specific entry requirements to be admitted for studies at third-cycle level within the subject of experimental physics, the applicant is required to have completed courses within the field of physics comprising at least 120 ECTS credits.
The requirements must be fulfilled at the time of approval to the PhD position and may not need to be fulfilled at the time of the application.
