Humlab is a place where the humanities, culture and information technology meets and engage. Tasks

We are looking for a software developer with an interest in tools- and method development, who wants to work in an academic environment with researchers in the fields such as archeology, media studies, language, philosophy and history. The work requires creativity, skills (and a willingness to learn new skills) and the ability to independently solve problems. Does this sound like you? Humlab is a center of excellence within the field of digital humanities, with an advanced and purposeful technical environment and a wide range of competences and skills within the field. Humlab has since a couple of years a strategic focus on applied ‘text analysis’ and ‘critical data visualization’ – areas closely related to data science, “big data” and data-driven research.

Humlab wants to strengthen and deepen competences and skills within the use and adaptation of linguistic technologies, tools and methods, as well as within visualization of different types of spatial-temporal data. These areas have much in common, e.g. when annotating entities in text (such as time, location, people, events and relationships) to enable visual and geographical representations of the text. Another example is to find and visualize themes in texts (so called topic modelling).

As a part of this venture, Humlab is now hiring a system developer/programmer with expertise in one or more of these areas. This position involves working in some of the many ongoing research projects at Humlab that require these kinds of competences.

Required competences

• Bachelor degree in Computer science, or other relevant Bachelor degree, and documented experience from software development/programming.
• Competence/experience from textual analysis, data visualization, linguistics or data science.
• Documented experience in web UI design & development.
• Practical experience of working with databases (design and development).
• Practical experience of software development in projects run by agile methodology.
• Excellent knowledge in Swedish and/or in English, both written and spoken.
• Good interpersonal skills and a documented ability to cooperate with colleagues in teams and projects.

Other desirable qualifications

• Experience from own research or working in an academic environment.
• Experience from composing applications for research projects.
• Experience of running your own research project.
• Experience of single-board computers (e.q. Arduino).
• Competence in statistics.
• Experience within the field of humanities or cultural heritage.
