The Department of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies, in collaboration with the research school in gender studies at the Umeå Centre for Gender Studies, invites applications for the doctoral training program in Philosophy.

Research Environment
The department offers courses and awards degrees at the undergraduate (first-cycle), advanced (second-cycle), and graduate (third-cycle) level. Research is pursued in a broad spectrum of areas, including epistemology, feminist philosophy, history of philosophy, philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, philosophy of perception, metaphysics, moral philosophy including normative ethics and meta-ethics, several areas of applied ethics, and political philosophy. The research is highly internationalized. An ambition is to contribute to the international development of knowledge through peer-reviewed publications in international journals, books from international publishers, and collaborations with researchers nationally and internationally. More information about the research environment is available on the individual researcher’s website.

Qualifications
To be admitted to studies at the third-cycle level, the applicant must meet both general and specific eligibility requirements. General requirements: a Master’s or equivalent degree in a relevant field, having completed course requirements worth at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits must be at second-cycle level, or in some other way – either in Sweden or abroad – having acquired equivalent knowledge. To satisfy the specific requirements for a PhD position in Philosophy, the applicant must have the equivalent of at least 30 ECTS credits at second cycle (Master’s) level, with an independent study of at least 15 ECTS credits.

Applicants are ranked with reference to their capacity to benefit from and complete the program. The assessment is based primarily on prior study results, with particular consideration given to essays, and the quality of the research plan and its relevance for the subject area. The assessment is also based on references and interviews, and possibly additional evaluations of the main candidates.

See General Syllabus

An overall assessment will be made of applicants’ prospects of successfully completing the programme in the relevant research environment. Applicants are therefore welcome to discuss the design of their research plans with the contact person of the subject.

Terms of employment
