Umeå University, Humanistisk fakultet

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

The Department of Culture and Media Studies invites applications for the doctoral training program in Media and Communication studies.

The Department of Culture and Media Studies is part of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Umeå University and has around 60 employees. The unique combination of disciplines makes it a creative milieu for scientific collaoration and interaction between cultural studies, cultural heritage studies, literature studies, media studies, digital humanities and journalism studies. The department has a broad array of education, doctoral studies and international acknowledged research. A lot of the research projects are within global challenges and digital humanities, the two priviliged research fields at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, see here.

The Department of Culture and Media Studies invites applications for a position in the doctoral training programme in Media and Communication studies. Media and Communication studies is an interdisciplinary field centred around studies of mediated communication of all kinds, from traditional mass media to digital and social media. Research related to journalism and journalistic practices is also part of the field. Our communication forms and practices are undergoing radical changes, not least due to the fast and far-reaching transformation of the media landscape today and the ongoing digitalization of society and culture. It is therefore important to understand and critically review, from a range of perspectives, the impact of these changing forms of mediated communication and their consequences for individuals, groups and societies.

A group of about 20 researchers, lecturers and PhD-students work in this field at the Department and their research covers areas such as strategic communication, media history, digital media, media representation, media didactics and science and environmental communication. Digitalization and the increased convergence between journalism and PR are particularly relevant fields of study in this context. We have popular undergraduate programmes in strategic communication and are recruiting a new professor in this area in order to strengthen this particular research profile. We would therefore especially welcome applicants with a profile and research interest in strategic communication.
