Professor of Food and Nutrition with a specialisation in Food Sociology
The Department of Food and Nutrition is advertising for a Professor of Food and Nutrition with a specialisation in Food Sociology.

Tasks
The specialisation covers sociological studies in the field of food and meals. The post requires the professor to manage research activities and develop the research environment at the Department by conducting research, and teaching and supervising doctoral students. The professor should have a clear vision of how to take this work forward in both the short and long term. The tasks also include teaching undergraduate and Master’s students and contributing to educational development, engaging with internal and external collaboration activities, initiating and taking part in the planning of research projects, and taking a strategic and proactive approach in applications for external research funding. The post may also include administration and managerial tasks at the Department of Food and Nutrition. The place of employment is Umeå, and the successful candidate is expected to be an active member of the various activities of the Department.

Eligibility requirements
To be eligible for this appointment, the candidate must be able to demonstrate both academic competence and educational expertise that are of relevance to the appointment’s specialisation; food sociology.

Grounds for assessment
The grounds for assessment for this appointment are the degree of competence within the eligibility requirement for the appointment, and expertise in either the field of food and nutrition or in another subject in the social sciences and humanities that is relevant to this specialisation. The grounds for assessment will also take into account administrative competence and interpersonal skills.

Academic competence refers to the undertaking of independent research, the ability to secure research funding in competition with other researchers, the ability to plan and manage research activities, documented collaborative research at national and international level, scientific publication, successful supervision and the ability to communicate one’s research to the wider community.

Educational expertise refers to the teacher’s work with students, the teacher’s own educational development and the teacher’s contribution to the educational development. It also refers to participation in supervision of doctoral students and participating in the design and implementation of courses and seminars.

Administrative competence means the ability to develop and manage activities and staff, ability to interact with the surrounding society, and the ability to provide information on research and development. Interpersonal skills refer to tasks such as formulating, planning, managing and collaborating on projects that include several people, and participating in joint activities with other researchers and other departments.

Weighing up the grounds for assessment
In weighing up the various grounds for assessment, scientific competence will be of greatest importance. Also of great importance is educational expertise. Further to these considerations are the degree of competence in developing and managing activities and staff, good interpersonal skills in supervision of doctoral students, and providing information on research and development.

In assessing scientific competence, special importance will be placed on research in food and nutrition or in another subject in the social sciences and humanities considered relevant to the specialisation required for this post.

In assessing educational expertise, account will be taken of planning, carrying out and evaluating teaching as well as supervision and examination. In this respect, special importance will also be placed on the supervision of doctoral students and collaboration in postgraduate activities.

In assessing administrative competence, importance will be placed on the ability to manage and develop activities and staff, experience of responsibility at departmental, faculty or university level etc., and well-documented interpersonal skills at both national and international level. Great importance will also be placed on interpersonal skills, initiative and involvement in activities. About the Department of Food and Nutrition
As an interdisciplinary academic field, Food and Nutrition studies all the processes that occur in connection with the individual’s encounter with food and eating. The Department of Food and Nutrition runs courses and study programmes, conducts research, offers postgraduate studies and involves collaboration in the main profiles: health, meals within school and health care, dietary and nutritional treatment, measurement and evaluation of dietary intake and dietary data, learning, and the individual and society. The Department hosts two study programmes at undergraduate level: the Dietetics Programme, the Food and Nutrition Programme and courses in Home and Consumer Studies. The Department offers at Master’s level subject courses as well as courses in methodology and thesis writing.
