Umeå University, Faculty of Science and Technology

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

The Department of Chemistry seeks a Postdoctor who will work on the photosynthetic energy conversion in higher plants using Arabidopsis thaliana. You have a doctoral degree in biochemistry or equivalent with a focus on higher plants, as well as experience of protein isolation from higher plants and also knowledge of basic biophysical measurements such as oxygen and chlorophyll fluorescence. The employment is for 24 months and is full time. Access by agreement. The closing date for application is 2017-10-31.

Main tasks
The tasks of the project is the analysis and characterization of low molecular weight proteins, cofactors and their function in the protein complex of Photosystem II's (PSII) assembly process. In particular, you will use greenhouse-grown Arabidopsis plants, but also the meristematic cell line for growing higher plants in cell culture. Extracts from these will then be characterized by various biophysical methods to determine their function and interaction in the PSII complex. An important part of this protein-based project is being able to extract different samples that require sound biochemical experience. This work also includes collaborating with both national and international researchers.

Qualifications
The applicant must have a doctoral degree, or a foreign degree that is deemed equivalent, in biochemistry or an equivalent subject with a focus on higher plants. Priority should be given to candidates who have completed their doctoral degree no more than three years before the closing date of the application, unless certain circumstances exist. You have thorough knowledge of plant biology or plant physiology. You have experience with biochemical and molecular biology methods, with a focus on protein extractions from plants. A requirement is experience of plant research on higher plants and the ability to independently taking responsibility and conducting research projects. Furthermore, you have experience with analysis of protein-protein interactions as well as analysis with SDS-PAGE and western blot analyzes. International experience, experience in cooperation in Sweden and foreign research stays are a prerequisite. You must also be socially competent, enthusiastic and a committed researcher who master English fluently both written and spoken.

Application
Your application must contain:

  1. A curriculum vitae (CV) including publication list
  2. Copy of doctoral thesis and diploma or equivalent
  3. Name and contact details of 3 reference persons
  4. A follow / letter of application stating why you are looking for the employment (max 1 pages)

Application deadline is 2017-10-31. You apply through our e-recruitment system. Log in and apply via the button at the bottom of the page. The employment is full-time and is limited to 24 months. Access by agreement.
