Project Description

The Wallenberg Centre for Molecular Medicine (WCMM) at Umeå University has been established as part of a national agenda with the goal of regaining a leading position for Sweden within medical research (wcmm.umu.se). The Centre is a collaboration between Knut and Alice Wallenberg’s foundation, Umeå University, Västerbotten County Council, the Kempe Foundations and the Cancer Foundation for Northern Sweden. In this call, the Centre is looking for up to four outstanding researchers - Wallenberg Molecular Medicine Fellows - to be positioned within one of the following areas of molecular medicine: cancer, infection biology, metabolic disorders (including diabetes), or neuroscience. The positions are provided with a generous support package including funding equivalent to one Postdoctoral Associate, one PhD Student recruitment and 4.5 million SEK for running costs. The successful candidates will work in strong research environments and have access to excellent local and national research infrastructures, including unique collections of longitudinal samples in existing biobanks.

Work description

The successful candidates will be connected to Wallenberg Centre of Molecular Medicine and the research will be within one of the four focus areas: cancer, infection biology, metabolism/diabetes and neuroscience. The candidates are expected to conduct translational-orientated research and to establish themselves as group leaders and conduct research at a high international level.

The position involves both research and teaching 50% of the time. Of this percentage at least 80% should be devoted to research, and up to 20% can be devoted to teaching, so that the criteria for promotion to a tenure position as Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor can be fulfilled. The remaining 50 % of the time is devoted to specialist medical training for physicians or dentists (specialiseringstjänstgöring [ST] för läkare eller tandläkare) in a speciality of the candidate’s choice.

Qualifications

To be eligible for the positions candidates must have a PhD degree, completed no more than seven years prior to the deadline for application, i.e., November 27, 2009, at the latest. A candidate who has completed the degree prior to this time may also be considered under special circumstances. These include absence due to illness, parental leave, clinical employment and appointment of trust in trade union organizations or other similar circumstances. The applicant must be a licensed physician or dentist, and have obtained license to practice medicine or completed a general dental practice, so that they are legally qualified for an employment as physician or dentist in specialist training in Sweden (ST-läkare eller ST-tandläkare). At the time of application the candidate should have started the medical internship or general dental practice. Candidates may have started the specialist medical training prior to application. Since the position will be combined with specialist medical training (ST) for physicians or dentists the candidate must meet Swedish language requirements (as defined by the National Board of Health and Welfare that also approves equivalent knowledge in Norwegian or Danish).

Assessment criteria and weighting of criteria

The candidate will be evaluated based on the following listed assessment criteria: 1) Scientific proficiency, 2) Pedagogical abilities, 3) Administrative skills, ability to initiate interdisciplinary cooperation and interact with the community, management skills as well as clinical skills.

In the assessment of the scientific competence particular emphasis will be given to originality, independence and the applicant's potential to develop an independent line of research. Completed postdoctoral research from another university than that at which the applicant completed the PhD is a major merit. The evaluation of pedagogical skills will focus on the ability to plan, execute, and evaluate teaching as well as supervision and examination.

Tenure track evaluation

The position is part of Umeå University’s tenure track system, in which an Assistant Professor has the right to apply for promotion to a tenured position as Senior Lecturer /Associate Professor combined with employment as specialist physician/dentist (after obtaining specialist physician/dentist competence). To be eligible for consideration for tenure, the application must be made within nine years for physicians, and within six years for dentists after taking up the position. If the Assistant Professor is not promoted to tenure, the position will be handled in accordance with existing rules for transition and redundancy.

More about the position

The position will be provided with a generous support package including funding for a Postdoctoral Associate and PhD student as well as money for running costs. The candidate is expected to complement the funding with own national and/or international grants. The researcher will work within one or more of the 13 departments within the Faculty of Medicine. The Department in which the candidate formally will be employed will be decided in consultation between the applicant and the Faculty of Medicine. An individual scientific and educational development plan will be formulated upon agreement between the applicant and the Head of Department where the applicant will be employed. One pedagogical and two scientific mentors will be appointed to support the successful candidate. A clinical tutor will also be appointed within the chosen medical specialty.
